Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2017

One of the Greatest Successes of the 2017 Vintage in Bordeaux

Among the legends of the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region, the fabulous Chateau Cos d’Estournel is a great figure indeed. Vintage after vintage, the wines of this great 2nd Classified Growth of Saint-Estephe have reached the peak of excellence, especially with this 2017 vintage.

In the atypical 2017 vintage full of contrasts, Cos d'Estournel did not falter in staying consistent to its reputation. True to the saying that great wines are born from great terroirs, the magnificent vineyard of Cos d'Estournel, located near the Gironde River, was spared the episodes of frost that hit the region at the end of April 2017. With fully ripened fruit boasting an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity, the 2017 vintage had all the potential for a great vintage. The flawless understanding of the plots, the experience of the teams and the technical excellence behind the winemaking made it possible to get the very best out of this tricky vintage.

With its typically Medoc style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (1%) and Petit Verdot (1%), the Cos d'Estournel 2017 is generous indeed. Its sublime elegance, delicate refinement, depth and density require time for the taster to reflect.

With the freshness of its aromas and delicate spicy notes typical of Saint-Estephe, the aromatic bouquet is precise and complex, exuding a purity of fruit. The palate is charming and silky, revealing juicy fruit and a tannic structure of great finesse. With its precision and straightforward nature, the palate stretches forth into a fabulous finish perfectly balancing the opulence and freshness of aromas. A sophisticated and prodigious Cos d'Estournel, promising a great potential for age.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, yields for the grand vin in 2017 were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and it was aged in 60% new oak. It came in at an alcohol of 13% and an IPT of 68. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cos d'Estournel needs a little coaxing to unfurl, revealing beautiful expressions of preserved plums, boysenberries, blackcurrant pastilles and wild blueberries with hints of Indian spices, menthol, lilacs and mossy tree bark plus a compelling suggestion of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and well-knit freshness supporting the tightly wound blue and black fruits layers, finishing long and fragrant. This wine will need a good 5-7 years in bottle before it begins to blossom and should go on for at least another 40 years. I expect this wine to be a blockbuster of a head-turner when I come back and taste it at 10 years of age!
