The Rich Aromatic Bouquet of a Patagonian Pinot Noir
Bodega Chacra was founded in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta with the aim to offer a pure expression of a unique terroir, that of Mainqué in the Rio Negro region of Patagonia, Argentina. The climate in this region is quite dry, with only seven inches of rainfall annually on average, which helps prevent vine diseases on the property. The Rio Negro Valley is an ancient riverbed, whose soils consist of limestone, sand and clay, perfect for the cultivation of Pinot Noir. The property includes two vineyards - an abandoned vineyard planted in 1932 and one planted in 1955 - from which two single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines are made. The vines are cultivated using biodynamic and organic principles with minimal intervention and an elimination of artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Instead, a wide range of vegetable and mineral compost preparations are added via cow horn to nourish the soil and vineyard work follows a lunar calendar. The Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir 2016 by Bodega Chacra is a 100% Pinot Noir wine, made of the vineyard planted in 1955. The wine is matured 35% in cement and 65% in used French oak barrels for 9 months.
The Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir 2016 from Bodega Chacra is an impressive Pinot Noir wine from Argentina, revealing a rich aromatic bouquet of cherries, plums and other black fruits, along with a subtle barnyard quality and savory hints of tomato and herb. On the palate, this wine is light and fresh, presenting black fruit flavors consistent with the nose, along with red fruits like strawberry and raspberry, and touches of wild mushroom. The finish provides a wonderful savory and mineral quality, making this wine truly memorable.
