Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A rounded, slightly soft style, with an almond cream note draping over the marmalade, glazed peach and mango flavors. The almond cream element takes over on the broad finish. Drink now through 2026. 6,000 cases made.

James Suckling

The dry pineapple and pear character with hints of honey and cream is impressive. Medium body, medium acidity and a spicy, delicious finish. Drink or hold.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2014 Carmes de Rieussec is a very pretty wine that can be enjoyed now. Candied lemon peel, coconut, pear, chamomile and white flowers meld together nicely in the glass. The Carmes shows the brighter profile that is characteristic of this early-harvested second wine from Rieussec, but with the textural breadth that is typical of the year.

Wine Enthusiast

R.V.

This rich, impressive wine is full of ripe fruit and balanced acidity. It has intensity, sweetness and botrytis rich enough to lend a dry core. Drink from 2022.

Description

A Sauternes Second Wine with an alluring amplitude and balance

The estate

Chateau Rieussec is located in the prestigious Sauternes appellation, in the south of the Bordeaux region. This chateau is steeped in history and belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon in the 18th century. It was then sold as "National Property" following the French Revolution. Classified as an 1855 Sauternes First Growth, Chateau Rieussec was acquired by the Rothschild family in 1984.

The vineyard

The estate’s Second Wine, Carmes de Rieussec, is a Sauternes wine that stems from a sandy-clay gravel terroir. The vineyard of Chateau Rieussec is situated on the border between Fargues and Sauternes and covers 93 hectares, thus making it one of the largest estates in the appellation.

The vintage

A rainy winter preceded a spring with above-average temperatures, which favored an early budbreak as well as an even flowering period. The two-stage veraison (end of June and after August 15th) led to an uneven ripening of the grapes. Despite these conditions and low yields, the vintage produced a complex and fresh wine.

The blend

Semillon (91%)

Sauvignon blanc (5%)

Muscadelle (4%).
