Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

Poised and harmonious, with a generous range of plum sauce, chopped black cherry, Earl Grey tea, graphite and cola notes sculpted by fine, chalky tannins. Long and fragrant, this is fresh and focused on the palate, with appealing hints of cocoa powder, dried lavender and leather lingering on the finish. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2036. 5,586 cases made, 400 cases imported.

Rioja Alta. 82% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 8% Mazuelo. TA 5.4 g/l, RS 1.4 g/l. Pale crimson. Firmly structured with lively freshness and firm, chalky tannins. The fruit is rather restrained and dry. It is classic, if not exciting. (FG)

Joaquín Hidalgo

The 2016 Gran Reserva is a meticulously crafted blend of 82% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 8% Mazuelo sourced from the esteemed Ygay Estate in Rioja Alta. It aged for up to 26 months in American oak barrels. This wine epitomizes the essence of Rioja reds when vineyard management and winemaking precision align with a distinct stylistic vision. Presenting an opaque garnet hue, it entices with a bouquet of complex aromas: plum marmalade, herbal undertones, maraschino cherry, dried fruits, licorice and subtle hints of balsamic and menthol. On the palate, it offers a dry and robust profile with a velvety, juicy texture. The finish is long, balanced and harmonious. The 2016 vintage exemplifies a wine crafted for aging, just beginning to reveal the nuances and intricacies of a bouquet that will evolve with time.

Tempranillo blended with 9% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo, and 2% Graciano, the medium-bodied 2016 Gran Reserva is impressive in sticky tannins, robust texture and mouthfeel, and dense layers of leather, soy, and oak. It's in its prime now but should last another 10-15 years.

A Rioja Gran Reserva with an elegant, balanced character

The estate

Founded in 1852 by Luciano de Murrieta, with the ambition of producing great wines with significant aging potential by applying techniques learned in Bordeaux, Bodega Marqués de Murrieta embodies the modern winemaking history of La Rioja. An absolute pioneer, it crafted and exported the first Rioja wines beyond Spain. Run since 1983 by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family, led by Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga and his sister Cristina, it combines traditional methods with ultra-modern facilities inaugurated in 2021. Its iconic Castillo Ygay, declared a museum in 2019, bears witness to its exceptional historical heritage.

The vineyard

This wine comes from the Ygay Estate, located in Rioja Alta. The vines thrive on clay-limestone soils at an altitude ranging from 320 to 485 meters.

Vinification and aging

The harvest was carried out by hand between October 10 and 18, 2016, allowing for a rigorous selection of grapes at optimal ripeness. After destemming, the grapes for the Gran Reserva 2016 fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for 8 to 12 days with skin maceration. A vertical press was used. The wine was then aged for 26 months in 225-liter American oak barrels. Bottling took place in July 2019.

Grape varieties

Tempranillo (82%), Graciano (10%), Mazuelo (8%).
