Super Tuscan

Super Tuscan image

Super Tuscan” designates an unofficial category of wines produced in the Tuscany region of Italy. The phrase was coined in the 1980’s, after a group of Tuscan “rebel winemakers” became frustrated at the regulations of the Chianti DOC and started experimenting with foreign grape varietals - notably Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon - banned by the Chianti appellation. Although individual Super Tuscans vary depending on the varietal composition and production techniques, the classic Super Tuscan tends to be full-bodied and aged in French oak. Primary aromas often include cherries and plum, eventually revealing spice and tobacco.Read More
