Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Elderflower Liqueur St Germain

Tasting

Color
A pale golden hue with warm highlights, ranging from light yellow to a deeper gold depending on the vintage. This luminous color comes entirely from the flowers' natural pollen, with no artificial coloring, offering a silky, refined viscosity.

Nose
The bouquet opens with intense floral notes dominated by authentic elderflower. Subtle citrus touches reminiscent of orange blossom, delicate hints of honeysuckle and light passion fruit aromas add complexity to this sophisticated, spring-like nose.

Palate
The palate opens with the freshness of elderflower, followed by flavors of tropical fruit, white peach and pear. A note of grapefruit brings lovely vibrancy and a subtle bitterness that perfectly balances the natural sweetness of the liqueur. The texture is silky, leading to a clean, refreshing finish with lingering floral notes.

Pairing Suggestions and Tasting Moments
This liqueur pairs wonderfully with fresh goat's cheese, whose acidity complements its subtle sweetness. It also enhances delicate seafood such as scallops, oysters or white fish served with a liqueur-infused vinaigrette. On the sweeter side, it is an ideal accompaniment to peach sorbet, apple or pear desserts, or blends beautifully into a lemon whipped cream.

Mixology
An essential in mixology, it is the star ingredient of the famous Hugo Spritz (paired with Prosecco, sparkling water, fresh mint and lime) or the classic St-Germain Spritz. It also shines in the St-Germain Royale, simply topped with Champagne for special occasions, or used to add a floral twist to classics such as the Margarita, the Gin & Tonic and the Old Fashioned.

Other Characteristics
Bottled at 20% alcohol by volume, this liqueur is guaranteed free from preservatives, stabilizers and artificial flavors or colorings. Each bottle bears a batch number indicating its year of production, creating a genuine vintage system that reflects the natural climatic variations of each year's harvest.

The Floral Elegance of an Exceptional French Liqueur

The Heritage and Vision of The Cooper Spirits Co.
Created in 2007 by American distiller Robert J. Cooper, the St Germain brand revolutionized the spirits world by giving birth to the world's first elderflower liqueur. Inspired by a cocktail he tasted in London, Cooper named his creation in tribute to the Parisian district of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a symbol of the artistic energy and free thinking of the Belle Époque. This French Liqueur embodies a unique artisanal know-how, combining the traditional heritage of distillation with a resolutely modern vision of mixology. Since its acquisition in 2013, the brand has come under the umbrella of the Bacardi Limited group, its current owner. Under this new ownership, it has experienced remarkable international growth while preserving its values of authenticity, its premium positioning and its recent commitment to sustainable practices, such as the use of hydrogen-produced glass bottles.

Craftsmanship at the Heart of Production
The making of this Elderflower Liqueur is governed by strict time and geographical constraints. Wild elderflowers are hand-picked, mainly in the Savoie and Ardèche regions, during a fleeting four-to-six-week window in spring. To preserve their delicate aromatic profile, pickers work in the early morning and transport the petals in special cloth bags, sometimes even by bicycle, to avoid any oxidation or mechanical damage.

Dynamic maceration begins just a few hours after picking. The flowers are infused in water precisely heated to between 50 and 55°C to extract the floral essence without altering the botanicals. The final blending of this Elderflower Liqueur then takes place in Fécamp, Normandy. There, the Master Blender marries the concentrated essence with neutral grape alcohol, sugar and a touch of French eau-de-vie.

This Liqueur stands out for its absolute purity, containing only these four ingredients. As production is inherently limited by the wild harvest, each bottle bears a batch number indicating its year of production. This vintage system makes every bottle a unique expression of a given year, reinforcing its status as an exceptional spirit prized by professionals around the world.
