Charakteristika und Verkostungstipps zum Last Consignment Black Tot
Tasting
Appearance
The color of this historic rum shows an old-gold hue with orange highlights.
Nose
The bouquet opens with notes of old woodwork and Havanas, accompanied by a register of precious spices including saffron, ginger, and cinnamon. The aromatic expression also reveals roasted peanuts, greengage plum, rhubarb jam, and caramelized fruits evoking citrus and apricot.
Palate
The palate unveils a spicy, powdery structure, enriched with dried exotic fruits such as banana, pineapple, and passion fruit. Licorice notes mingle with floral touches of violet, lilac, and hyacinth, complemented by aromatic herbs (verbena, chamomile, sage). The finish, broad and fleshy, lingers on ylang-ylang and a balsamic streak, before shifting toward wild black fruits (blackberries, blueberries), mint chocolate, and a hint of pipe tobacco.
Pairings and serving moments
This exceptional rum is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, to fully appreciate its complexity and unique historical character.
Other characteristics
Bottled at its natural strength of 54.3% (95° proof), this rum has undergone no chill filtration and no sugar addition. It comes from traditional distillation combining pot stills and column stills.
An exceptional Caribbean rum, a witness to British naval history
Black Tot: the Royal Navy’s naval heritage in a bottle
Black Tot, an emblematic brand of Elixir Distillers founded by Sukhinder Singh, with Oliver Chilton as master blender, perpetuates more than 300 years of British naval history. Launched on the occasion of the 2010 bottling of the Royal Navy’s original stocks preserved since “Black Tot Day” on July 31, 1970, the brand offers authentic blends of Caribbean rums (Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad). Black Tot stands out for a purist approach: no added sugar, no chill filtration, and bottling at natural cask strength, with rums aged under tropical conditions prior to blending.
Last Consignment: the Royal Navy’s last rum
The Black Tot Last Consignment represents a unique liquid testimony to British maritime history. This exceptional blend comes from the last stocks of rum of the Royal Navy, kept in stoneware jars under customs control since December 1970. Only 3,000 bottles were produced from these rums, the result of a continuous blend dating back to the early 1800s, originating from the British colonies of Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad. The rums from Port Mourant formed the backbone of this historic blend.
Released on July 31, 2010, exactly 40 years after “Black Tot Day,” which marked the end of the three-century-old tradition of daily rum rations for Royal Navy sailors, this product is presented in an exceptional wooden case, accompanied by a regulation timbale from the period.
