Rosso di Valtellina

Valtellina, an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, has been producing wine for over 2000 years. Today it is known for its bright, cherry-scented wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, known here as Chiavennasca (after the nearby town of Chiavenna). The classic Rosso di Valtellina wine is bright crimson in color, with an aromatic bouquet of dried cherries, tar and rose water. As might be expected for a mountain-grown wine made from Nebbiolo, the body is relatively light, and laced with grippy tannins.
