Vinum

Toasty notes, herbal spice, red berry fruit on the nose; lively and fruity on the palate, light-bodied, low intensity, good harmony of elements. Perfect for lunch.

Decanter

Dark fruits, tobacco and clove, black cherry and blackcurrant with a dusting of black pepper spice. Smooth and sapid, this has energy and focus, crisp and slightly sweet with chalky tannins. Well structured, deep and quite serious for a second wine. Tannin density, broad mouthfeel and overall lift. Some bitterness and touches of chalk and caramel on the finish. 20% new oak, 80% one-, two- and three-year-old barrels for 14 months. pH 3.48.

Description

The suppleness and length on the palate of a second wine from Saint-Julien

The estate

An emblematic reference of the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Lagrange is rooted in a history spanning millennia. As early as the Gallo-Roman era, the site hosted a “Villa Rustica” before the Order of the Knights Templar began cultivating vines there. The estate reached its peak in the 18th century, crowned in 1855 by its classification as a 3ᵉ Cru Classé. In 1983, it joined the Japanese Suntory group under the leadership of its president, Keizo Saji. A vast renovation campaign, combined with an ambitious team, has since established Château Lagrange among the great names of the Médoc.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Lagrange covers 118 hectares within the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines rest on a siliceous gravel soil with an underlying clay-limestone subsoil. This terroir, combined with the region’s temperate oceanic climate, promotes slow and even grape ripening, imparting the wines with their distinctive character.

The wine

As the estate’s second wine, Les Fiefs de Lagrange is crafted from vines averaging 30 years of age.

The vintage

Nicknamed “L'Éclat de l'Adversité,” the 2024 vintage was marked by capricious weather that required constant adaptation and meticulous winemaking. Harvesting took place from September 24 to October 8, 2024, with manual picking followed by a double sorting process—first by hand, then by optical scanner—ensuring a rigorous selection of the berries.

Winemaking and aging

Parcel-by-parcel and intra-plot vinification in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Fermentation lasts 18 to 25 days with moderate pump-overs, délestages, or punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation is carried out by co-inoculation. The early blend occurs in January, followed by 13 months of aging in barrels, 20% of which are new.

Grape varieties

Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2024 is the result of a blend of 47% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon, and 12% petit verdot.
