Champagne Taittinger, a singular history and heritage

18th century: the origins of excellence

The Taittinger Champagne house traces its origins back to Reims, where it was established in 1734. Initially founded as “Forest-Fourneaux” by Jacques Fourneaux, it is one of the oldest champagne houses. However, the house was only given its current name in 1932, when Pierre Taittinger, a passionate and visionary businessman, acquired the property and associated his name with the house. This marked the beginning of a new era for the House, which witnessed a remarkable expansion.

A pioneering spirit in Champagne

Pierre Taittinger, the House's emblematic figure, ushered in a new era of refinement and subtlety. After the Second World War, his son François took over the reins of the family business, resolutely continuing his father's work and contributing to its international renown.

Modernity and family continuity

In 2005, the Taittinger group was acquired by Starwood Capital, and the Champagne house was taken over the following year by Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, marking the return of the estate to the family fold. This period was marked by the introduction of major innovations designed to ensure the brand's longevity, while preserving the traditions for which it is renowned. Since January 2020, Vitalie Taittinger has succeeded her father, Pierre-Emmanuel, carrying on the family legacy with great dedication.

A constant quest for excellence

A unique terroir

Maison Taittinger is located in the heart of Reims, on a terroir renowned for the quality of its vineyards, planted on gently sloping hills with optimal sun exposure. The chalky soil, typical of the Champagne region, provides ideal drainage and contributes to the extreme finesse of each cuvée.

The temperate, ocean-influenced climate, with cold winters and moderately hot summers, plays a crucial role in the ripening and quality of the grapes. The chalk in the soil brings a distinctive minerality and freshness, while the climate ensures good acidity and optimal ripeness of the grapes. All these influences combine to create bottles of sublime refinement and subtlety, the true signature style of Maison Taittinger.

A meticulous and precise selection

The exceptional quality of Taittinger champagnes stems from a meticulous selection of grapes from the finest vineyards. The estate favors exceptional parcels, such as those in the Côte des Blancs for its Chardonnays, and in the Marne Valley and Montagne de Reims for its Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Complementing each other beautifully, Chardonnay brings freshness, lightness and elegant minerality, while Pinot Noir and Meunier contribute structure, roundness and a more pronounced fruitiness.

Highly precise vinification and aging

The art of vinification

The vinification of Taittinger champagnes begins with a gentle, meticulous pressing of the grapes, preserving the integrity of the berries. The resulting juice is then clarified by settling, an essential step in guaranteeing the purity of the champagne. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, ensuring precise temperature control and optimal preservation of the grapes' primary aromas.

Aging in the house's thousand-year-old chalk cellars

The aging process for Taittinger champagnes is distinguished by its extended duration, which often exceeds appellation standards. This extended maturation in bottle, in the house's thousand-year-old chalk quarry, lends complexity and finesse to the wines. The deep cellars, with their constant temperature and humidity, are essential both to ensure optimum aging of the champagnes and to contribute to their characteristic complexity.

The Taittinger signature, between elegance and richness

With a predominance of Chardonnay, Taittinger's signature cuvées are undeniably oriented towards elegance. This profile, characterized by fine, persistent bubbles, delicate freshness and subtle aromas, is an invitation to subtlety. Brut, Blanc de Blancs, Rosé... the Taittinger range offers a broad palette of exceptional champagnes, harmoniously combining creativity with the house's traditions.
