Description
The richesse and intensity of a Chilean fine wine
The estate
Viña Almaviva was created in 1997 through a partnership between Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Don Alfonso Larrain, President of Viña Concha y Toro. The Viña Almaviva project was born from the ambition to produce a fine wine from Chile by combining French viticultural know-how with a unique expression of the Chilean terroir. Located in the heart of the magnificent Maipo Valley, the Almaviva vineyard covers 50 hectares. The iconic grape varieties of the Bordeaux region thrive in this exceptional terroir. Almaviva has become an essential reference for great Chilean wines around the world.
The wine
Highly rated by international critics, the Almaviva 2018 received a score of 98/100 by James Suckling.
The vintage
Of exceptional quality, 2018 was undoubtedly one of the greatest vintages of the decade in Chile. This great vintage is characterized by its complexity and balance. After a rainier start to the season than in previous years, the climatic conditions between January and March allowed the grapes to reach a very nice maturity. The harvest began on March 26 with Merlot and April 2 with Cabernet Sauvignon. The significant thermal amplitudes between night and day favored slow and gradual ripening by maintaining a very good balance between freshness and maturity. The harvest took place over a total period of 9 weeks, ending with Carménère on May 24. The 2018 wine offers a perfect expression of this vintage through a combination of the quantity of a very generous harvest and the exceptional quality of the fruit.
The blend
Cabernet sauvignon
(72%), carménère (19%), cabernet franc (6%), petit verdot (3%).
The tasting
At the tasting, this magnificent Almaviva vintage seduces with its aromatic palette, which is full of nuance. The bouquet reveals notes of red berries and floral fragrances. This is followed by notes of tobacco leaves combined with notes of dried herbs, damp earth and leather. Intense and very rich, the wine envelops the palate with its full texture. Perfectly polished and refined, the tannins contribute an elegant structure to the wine, which nevertheless retains its bright and lively fruit.
