Van Volxem : Rotschiefer Riesling Kabinett 2015

A Delicately Creamy and Mineral Riesling from Mosel

Situated in the center of Wiltingen, in the heart of the Saar Valley of Germany's prestigious Mosel region, Van Volxem is a winery whose history dates back to Roman times. The estate's vineyards were first planted in the 3rd century, making them some of the oldest of the region. In the 11th century, the vineyards were rediscovered by monks and cultivation of them was taken over by the Jesuits in the 16th century. When the estate was secularized after the French Revolution, it was purchased by Gustav van Volxem, originally from Brussels. A true visionary and pioneer, van Volxem worked tirelessly to transform the property into one of the most prestigious estates of Germany. After several generations of ownership by the van Volxem family, the estate was acquired by Roman Niewodniczanski and expanded through the purchase of new premium sites. The Rotschiefer Riesling Kabinett by Van Volxem is a Kabinett style Riesling, made from vines from three sites (Gottesfuss, Kupp and Kosterberg), planted on the area's very best slopes of red slate, rich in iron oxide. This soil type lends a wonderful depth and minerality to the finished wines. The grapes were fermented using only indigenous yeast and the wine matured in stainless steel tanks for 6-7 months.

The Rotschiefer Riesling Kabinett 2015 by Van Volxem is a dry Mosel Riesling presenting a gorgeous golden hue in the glass. The attack in the mouth is delicately creamy, perfectly balanced with the final mineral structure, salinity and tension of the wine. The alcohol is relatively low in this wine, making it easy to drink. This German Kabinett Riesling offers aromas of sweet spices and white flowers, underlined by flavors of pear, citrus and white currant. A beautifully fresh Riesling, ready to drink now, but which will also age beautifullly over the next 10 years in the bottle.
