Mocali (also known as Azienda Agricola Mocali di Ciacci Tiziano) is an iconic wine producer in the area of Montalcino of Tuscany, Italy. The estate was founded by Dino Ciacci. Ciacci was also one of the original 25 winemakers to establish the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967. The Mocali vineyards were originally part of a farm, which also produced grains, sheep cheese and olive oil. However in 1985, a frost destroyed the olive trees of the estate and the family turned their attention fully to Brunello wine production.
It was Dino’s grandson Tiziano Ciacci and his wife Alessandra Mililotti who first decided to bottle the estate’s wines and sell them. They gradually replaced the olive trees with Sangiovese for Brunello di Montalcino and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to produce red wine.
Mocali’s debut vintage was 1990 from just a few acres of Sangiovese vines. Today, the estate produces the flagship Brunello di Montalcino of Tuscany and Rosso di Montalcino from around 25 acres in Montalcino in Tuscany. Here, the vineyards are planted between 980 and 1150 ft above sea level on slopes facing the Castiglione del Bosco. The vines are mostly dedicated to the grape varietal Sangiovese Grosso for Brunello production. They stretch their roots deep into marl and limestone soils.
In 1996, following a series of very successful vintages, the Ciacci family acquired a neighboring farm, from which they currently produce their Poggio Nardone label. Mocali also produces Morellino di Scansano from the 35 acres they purchased in the Maremma region of Tuscany in 2001. Despite significant expansion in the past two decades, Mocali remains a 100% family owned and operated business. Tiziano and Alessandra’d daughter Pamela has recently joined the Mocali team.
Winemaking at Mocali has aways been more or less traditional in style, with the Brunello classico wines matured in large French and Slavonian oak casks. Their Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Sangiovese is produced only in the best vintages and aged for 4 years in French oak casks. Meanwhile, their more modern-style Poggio Nardone Brunello wines are matured in 500 liter oak casks, of which ¼ are new each year. Meanwhile the Mocali Fossetti Rosso Toscano aged for only 8 months in French oak tonneaux.
