Description
An Earthy and Mineral Pinot Gris from Alsace
Maison Pierre Sparr is located in the heart of the Alsace winemaking region, in the prestigious Haut-Rhin area. The estate has been passed down through several generations within the Sparr family, since its founding in 1680 by Jean Sparr. During the Second World War, the vineyards were completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt by Pierre Spar, who undertook the task with courage. The estate is currently run by the 9th generation of descendants from the family. The winemaking and vine growing is managed by Alexandra Boudrot, who has been at the estate for 12 years. The Pinot Gris 2014 from Pierre Sparr is a 100% Pinot Gris wine made from grapes sourced from Thann in the Haut-Rhin and Kintzheim in the Bas-Rhin. The soils here range from granite to limestone and gneiss to chalky-clay. The vines, aged 34 years on average, are managed without irrigiation and are hand-harvested in mid-October. After harvest, the grapes undergo a traditional vinification with no skin contact with temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation. The wines are aged in stainless steel tanks. The Pinot Gris 2014 from Pierre Sparr displays a brilliant golden-yellow color in the glass. On the nose, this wine exudes deep, earthy aromas, reminiscent of autumn leaves and ripe grapes. Swirling the glass reveals fruity notes of juicy apricot, along with a mineral touch, which lends a certain elegance to this wine. On the palate, this Alsace Pinot Gris is soft and delicate, achieving a great balance between sweetness and acidity, and the same elegant minerality as expressed on the nose. The texture of this wine is firm and very sleek. On the finish, a subtle touch of smoky bacon and spice.
