Description
A Mineral Marsanne-Roussanne from Saint-Peray
In 1981, after completing his studies in Viticulture and Oenology in Beaune and Montpellier, Pierre Gaillard decided to purchase a parcel of land called Clos de Cuminailles in Malleval. It was here that he first established his business, gradually adding the Madeloc estate in Banyuls-sur-Mer (2002) and the Cottebrune in Faugeres (2007). Gaillard currently manages 77 hectares in total, stretching from Cote-Rotie in the north to Cornas in the south. The St Peray 2014 is a wine made from Marsanne and Roussanne grapes purchased from around the Saint-Peray appellation. The vines grow in granite and silty limestone soils in the foothills of the Central Massif. The wine was aged on fine lees in 228-liter oak casks for a period of 6 to 8 months after complete malolactic fermentation. The St Peray 2014 shows off a light, bright yellow color in the glass. On the nose, aromas of fresh lemon and pear are accented by a mineral quality, with hints of honeydew coming forth after swirling the glass. Following a broad and juicy attack, this St. Peray white wine reveals a pleasant tightness on the mid-palate, offering lively flavors of orchard fruit and candied ginger along with a zesty acidity. This wine reveals a long, satisfying finish with spicy hints of ginger and a chalky minerality.
