Description
A Crisp, Barrel-Fermented Chenin Blanc
The Survivor Chenin Blanc from Overhex is a white wine made exclusively from the Chenin Blanc variety in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The grapes are sourced from vineyards planted on deep red Oakleaf and Hutton soils with great water retention, which lend a characteristic structure to the wines. Here the vines enjoy cool Benguela sea breezes, which make for milder conditions in the summertime. The grapes were picked on a cool February morning and transported to the winery with dry ice and sulphur added in order to prevent oxidation. No skin contact was allowed and the free run juice was separated from the pressed must. Around 30% of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, while 70% was fermented in new, untoasted French oak barrels of 500L for 4 months before being blended and then bottled.
In the glass the Survivor Chenin Blanc from Overhex displays a lovely, yellowish gold color. The nose opens with plenty of fresh lime and stone fruit, which is consistent with the palate that follows: a medley of apricot and peach flavors dominate. This wine offers a very pleasant, crisp acidity balanced with an excellent integration of oak. The finish is generous and zesty, with hints of fresh citrus zest coming through at the end.
