Description
An Outstanding Sangiovese from Tuscany
Montevertine is located in the heart of the Chianti region in Tuscany and history can date this property back to the 11th century. At the time it was a rural defence fortress for the area, however in 1976 Sergio Manetti planted two hectares of vineyards on the land with hopes to make wine for family and friends. Soon after planting the vineyards he devoted his life to producing wines from this beautiful estate. Manetti crafted his wine with almost exclusively Sangiovese grapes, while incorporating small portions of Colorino and Canaiolo. By 1981, Montevertine left the Chianti Classico consortium because Manetti felt strongly about not including
Le Pergole Torte is the pride of Montevertine winery and is only made in outstanding vintages. It is made with Sangiovese grapes from the best parcels of the 18 hectares of vineyards, with a majority of the grapes coming from the oldest vineyard site named Pergole Torte planted in 1968. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 12 months and racked in small French oak barrels for an additional 12 months. The wines are then bottled without filtration and sit for at least three months prior to release. The famous label was created in 1982 when Sergio commissioned artist Alberto Manfredi to depict a female face and this tradition has cared on to present day. Despite a challenging and wet growing season in 2014, this vintage is wonderfully balanced with freshness, lively acidity and a touch of earthy notes. The wine is medium bodied with a refined intensity and a persistent finish.
