Description
A South African Pinotage Aged in Burgundian Oak
The Eikendal estate we see today was born in 1981, when the Saager family from Zurich purchased the 76-hectare estate and set to work modernizing the vineyards and constructing a cellar. The property is located in what is considered the "Golden Triangle" of winemaking on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain, between Somerset West and Stellenbach in the Cape of South Africa. Here, moist sea breezes from False Bay deliver a cooling effect and the vines grow in a soil structure compatible with the cultivation of a wide range of varietals. The vineyards are managed according to principles of minimal intervention, with chemicals only used when absolutely necessary. The Pinotage 2017 from Eikendal is a red wine made exlusively of Pinotage, 90% of which is grown on a 20-year-old, non-irrigated vineyard block in Stellenbosch with decomposed granite and "Koffieklip" ("Coffee Stone") soils. The rest of the fruit comes from the Elgin Valley. Following a manual harvest, the fruit is cooled down to 1°C and then sorted at the cellar. The grapes are pre-soaked for 15 days at temperatured below 10°C. The must undergoes wild fermentation with 35% whole bunch added before a long, slow fermentation at 30°C. During this time, one punch-down was carried out per day. After fermentation, the wines are matured for 12 months in 500 L Burgundian oak barrles of 2, 3 and 4 previous uses. The Pinotage 2017 from Eikendal is a South African Pinotage with a light body and great finesse, truly an icon of the estate. On the nose, this wine expresses abundant aromas of ripe strawberries and fresh cherries. These aromas carry through to the palate, which is very rich in fruit, complemented by subtle touches of Burgundian oak. The tannins are velvety and fine, extending into a very smooth finish.
