Description
A Rustic Corbieres Red with Aromas of Black Fruit and Garrigue
Domaine Faillenc Sainte Marie is a small property of 8 hectares on the rocky foothills of Mont Alaric in the Corbieres appellation of Languedoc. The family business was established by Dominique Gibert together with his wife Marie-Therese, and is now run by their son Jean-Baptiste Gibert, who has expanded the property and the number of wines produced. Jean-Baptiste has also began the process of converting the vineyards to certified organic status. The terroir here is characterized by inhospitable rocky terraces of limestone and a very dry climate created by the northerwesterly Tramontane wind and the southerly Autan breezes from the Mediterranean. The estate's wines transmit, first and foremost, the wild nature of this terroir, which often limits the yield severely (to as little as 25 hL/ha). The Corbieres red 2016 from Faillenc Sainte Marie is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, which are fermented together after a partial destemming. The maceration period is quite long, allowing the maximum amount of color and flavor to be extracted before pressing. The wine is matured in stainless steel tanks with no exposure to oak. This allows the natural terroir-driven flavors to manifest themselves to the fullest. The Corbieres red 2016 from Faillenc Sainte Marie is dark purple in the glass, a product of its long maceration period. This Languedoc red wine shows off an enormous character with a somewhat rustic, "animal" nose perfect blended with a bouquet of vivacious black forest berries, including blackberries, black currant and stewed plums. On the palate, its earthy flavors of garrigue are consistent with the nose, offering a strong black fruit core. The mouthfeel is quite velvety and smooth, with a firm tannic structure but not too much weight, considering its great density.
