A Classic White Wine from Jura with Autumnal Apple and Pear AromasThe story of Domaine de Montbourgeau begins in 1920, when Victor Gros took over the estate and planted the vines in the Jura region of France. In 1937 the Etoile area where the vines were located was named an AOC appellation. The Domaine de Montbourgeau winery was constructed in 1956, when Jean Gros took over from his father and expanded the vineyard property. In 1986, Jean's daughter Nicole joined the family business, modernizing the cellars and acquiring more land to plant with vines. The estate now covers 8 hectares, planted with Chardonnay and Savagnin, as well as a small amount of Trousseau and Poulsard. The Etoile 2014 by Domaine de Montbourgeau is a classic white wine from the estate, bottled after 24 to 30 months in barrel. The wine is predominantly Chardonnay but some Savagnin vines can be found within parcels of Chardonnay and contribute to the blend. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel and after malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into small barrels and demi-muids, where they spend 2 years. After maturation, the wines are blended and left in cuve for several months before bottling.
The Etoile 2014 by Domaine de Montbourgeau is a charismatic Chardonnay from Jura produced in an oxidative style, with delightful aromas of bruised apples, maple, pear and nuts on the nose. The palate is consistent with the nose in terms of flavors, with additional dried fruit and honey aromas coming through, along with a refreshing acidity. This Jura wine is a great representation of its unique style, with a very persistent finish.

The whites tend to spend one winter in topped up foudres and a second one in barriques that are not refilled. The current 2014 L'Etoile is the basic white produced exclusively with Chardonnay and is from a cooler year, which seemed to have a lighter effect of the veil of yeasts, built around freshness and minerality rather than volume. It has settled down already and has good complexity. Long and fresh. I'm sure this is going to be long lived in bottle. 20,000 bottles produced.
