Description
Les Clos de Hospices is a plot of land exclusive to the Moreau family, a one-acre monopole, located at the foot of the Grand Cru Les Clos appellation and have a slightly different terroir to the rest of the vineyard, with slightly heavier marl soils, old and densely planted vines. Christian’s great-grandfather acquired this parcel of land at the Chablis Hospice in 1904. It is located on the right bank of the Serein River, with southern exposure, soils composed of Kimmeridgian marl and calcium carbonate from the Upper Jurassic Era. The Chardonnay grapes are harvested by hand, carried by small trailer which unloads the grapes by gentle vibration to avoid crushing, and hand sorted in the cellar to eliminate unripe or damaged grapes. The winemaking process for this Grand Cru wine is done in all stainless steel vats and then aged 4 months in barrel (10% new or young barrel).
Tasting Note: This is a wine meant to age and develop in bottle, the subtle application of new oak on this allows the acidity and intense minerality to elegantly soften; this wine has great depth that with be rewarding after a decade of cellar aging.
