Description

A Pomerol wine with a seductive finesse and complexity

The estate

Located within the Pomerol appellation on the right bank of Bordeaux, the origins of Château Rouget date back to several centuries ago. Although Château Rouget has been mentioned in cadastral archives from 1700, its terroir was recognised for its quality at the end of the Roman Empire, making it one of the oldest estates in the appellation. The passion and rigour of the various owners in running this vineyard allowed Château Rouget to be recognised at the end of the 19th century as one of the best vintages of the appellation. Château Rouget is the only Bordeaux estate belonging to a family from Burgundy following its acquisition by the Labruyère family in 1992.

The vineyard

Château Rouget is a Pomerol wine made from a 17-hectare vineyard. The vines are around 40 years old and are planted on a terroir composed of gravel and clay. The subsoil is made up of gravelly outcroppings and clay-gravel terraces.

The vintage

A particularly dry winter preceded a very wet spring. Despite these unstable conditions, budburst was early. On 28 and 29 April, the westernmost plots of the estate were hit by a hard frost. The mild weather at the beginning of May favoured a regular vegetative development and an even flowering period, all in a remarkably healthy vineyard. Harvesting began on September 20th and was carried out in several stages to ensure that the grapes were picked at optimum maturity.

Vinification and ageing

The vinification is carried out partly in whole crop (40%) and in wooden vats (60%). Aged in new oak (30%).

The blend

Château Rouget 2017 comprises a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
