Description

The freshness and elegance of a great red wine from Saint-Estephe

The estate

Founded in the 18th century, Chateau Ormes de Pez is located in the Medoc, in the appellation of Saint-Estephe. Owned by the Cazes family since 1940, Chateau Ormes de Pez has undergone major renovations and modernizations. The estate takes its name from the word "pez" meaning "peace" in the local dialect, also meaning the elm trees that once were found on the estate before this variety died out in Europe. The wines of Chateau Ormes de Pez are produced with the same care and attention as those of the Cru Classe de Pauillac Chateau Lynch-Bages, which also belongs to the Cazes family. Reflecting the typical style of Saint-Estephe, the wines of Chateau Ormes de Pez combine generous and bright fruit with a fleshy texture and powerful material, promising a very good aging potential.

The vineyard

Located to the north of the town of Saint-Estephe, the Chateau Ormes de Pez vineyard covers 40 hectares of vines planted on two distinct terroirs. Here, we find the famous “Garonnaise gravel” in gravelly plots with quartz and rolled pebble soils. The terroir of Chateau Ormes de Pez is also marked by the presence of clay-sandy plots which are fresher. The vines are 35 years old on average and the grape varieties of the property reflect the winemaking tradition of the Médoc.

The vintage

As in Pauillac, the vineyards of the Saint-Estephe appellation experienced an early budding. After the first two rainy weeks in June, summer finally arrived with scorching heat. Thanks to a team of around 40 people, the harvest began on September 24 and ended on October 4.

The winemaking

Classic vinifications with an average duration of 20 days. Beginning of the running off process on October 15.

The aging

Aging in barrels for 16 months.

The blend

Cabernet sauvignon (40%), merlot (50%), cabernet franc (7%), petit verdot (3%).

The tasting

Tasted as a wine future, the Chateau Ormes de Pez 2019 displays a dark purple-garnet color. The aromatic bouquet expresses beautiful notes of black fruit, like blackberry and blackcurrant. On the palate, the vintage highlights the personality of Cabernet Sauvignon – great structure with melted tannins, - while Merlot brings its signature fruity notes. The aging manifests itself in discreet woody notes that bring great complexity to the wine. Freshness, elegance and velvety texture characterize this great red wine from the Saint-Estephe appellation.
