Description

A gourmet and structured Margaux Cru Classe

The estate

Chosen as a 3rd Classified Growth of Margaux during the great classification of Medoc wines in 1855, Chateau Kirwan has belonged to the Schÿler family since 1925. The dynamic Philippe Delfaut has endowed the estate with new infrastructures and elevated it to the height of its appellation. Chateau Kirwan today belongs to the elite circle of Margaux Grands Crus.

The vineyard

Located on the Cantenac plateau, in Margaux, the Chateau Kirwan vineyard covers 37 hectares of vines. This superb outcropping of gravel and clay meet all the conditions necessary to ripen the great grape varieties of the Médoc.

The vintage

While the budding of the vines took place early due to high temperatures, the warm temperatures and heavy rainfall during the months of April and May resulted in significant mildew pressure. The drier conditions in the second half of May favored an even flowering. From June 19 to August 11, no rain was recorded. These very dry conditions had an impact on the vines, especially on the younger plants, which were watered several times. Veraison took place in July instead of August as usual. The end of July was marked by drought and significant water stress. A storm in mid-August revived the maturation process of the fruit, resulting in grapes that were small in size, yet rich in phenolic compounds, tannins and color.

The winemaking

Low-intervention winemaking with gentle extraction and maceration for 15 to 20 days, to obtain a perfect balance between freshness, fruity aromas and structure.

The blend

The Chateau Kirwan 2020 was made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Cabernet Franc (28%), Merlot (14%) and Petit Verdot (7%).
