Description

The richness and elegance of a Saint-Julien wine

The estate

Château Gruaud Larose, a historic name in the Saint-Julien appellation, was founded in 1757, when two estates merged. The estate’s name was created when Joseph Gruaud's heir added his name "Larose." Château Gruaud Larose has been in the Merlaut family since 1997, and embodies the excellence of the great red wines of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, delighting enthusiasts of the appellation with its style.

The vineyard

Château Gruaud Larose is a Saint-Julien wine that stems from an 82-hectare vineyard. The vines, on average 46 years old, rest on quaternary Garonne gravel deposited over 600,000 years ago.

The vintage

A mild and very wet winter gave way to a spring where the rainfall and coolness slowed down the growth cycle. Although the summer season was quite cool, July had a heatwave. Grey and cool, August gave way to a particularly mild September and October, ideal conditions to refine the ripening.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvested by plot. Vinification in cement vats (50%) and wooden vats (50%). Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Maceration for 30 days. Pressing then transfer to barrels for 18 to 24 months in new barrels (40%), of one and two wines.

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (58%)
Merlot (29%)
Cabernet Franc (8%)
Petit Verdot (5%)
