The estate

Chateau Batailley’s name refers to the Hundred Years’ War; in 1453, on the grounds of the estate. Chateau Batailley became a winegrowing estate in the 17th century. This 5th Classified Growth in 1855 is produced on the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Aged by 40 years on average, the vineyard, which covers 57 hectares in total, is planted on silica and gravelly soils.

The vintage

Marked by its earliness and episodes of extreme drought, 2020 was the third vintage in a trilogy of very high quality wines; 2018, 2019 and 2020. A very mild winter encouraged early vine budbreak, followed by a flowering noted in early May. More erratic conditions in May and June gave way to a milder beginning to July, which allowed for ripening to begin. The lack of rain arrived alongside strong summer heat. The grapes harvested in September were of a very high quality, giving this vintage roundness, richness and elegance.

Blend

The 2020 Chateau Batailley is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (26%), Petit Verdot (2%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).
