Description

An Austrian Pinot Noir with Red Fruit and Earthy Notes

Anton Bauer took over his parents' wine estate - at that time 3.2 hectares in size - in 1992 and has since then created beautiful Pinot Noir wines expressing the unique terroir of the Wagram wine region of northeastern Austria. Here, clay and loess soils dominate with occasional bits of granite, a thick layer into which vines stretched their roots deep. The vines planted on the west-east expansion of the Wagram ridge enjoy a southern orientation with plenty of sun exposure, as well as cool air from the Waldviertel region, which flows into the Danube Valley and moderates the temperature. The interplay between warm and cool leads to wines with many layers of flavor and an acidity perfectly balanced with fruit. The grapes for the Anton Bauer Pinot Noir 2016 were harvested by hand and selected on a sorter belt with a camera. The juice ferments and the wine is aged on its lees in large, previously used oak barriques for an extended period of time, allowing the wines to achieve a good balance between acidity and alcohol in a gradual, natural manner.

The Wagram Pinot Noir 2016 by Anton Bauer displays a pale red color, typical of cooler-climate Pinot Noir. On the nose, this Austrian wine exudes pure notes of red fruits, including strawberries, raspberries and Morello cherries. These mingle with floral touches of violet and the faintest hints of undergrowth, which add a natural authenticity to the profile. On the palate, the wine is very nicely balanced and elegant, with a long finish dominated by red berries. An all-purpose red wine to be enjoyed in its youth, this Pinot Noir will go nicely with lighter meat dishes, fish and vegetable medleys.
