Description
An Australian Riesling with Beautiful Acidity
With its very first hectare of vines planted in 1971, the Alkoomi estate now spans over a 105-hectare vineyard and winery in the Frankland River area of Western Australia's Great Southern wine-growing region. The name "Alkoomi" comes from the aboriginal dialect and means "a place we chose," which makes sense considering the region's exceptional terroir of deep, well-draining gravelly loam soils, similar to those of Bordeaux. Vineyard management at Alkoomi has also followed environmentally sustainable principles. The White Label Riesling 2017 of Alkoomi is a white wine made exclusively of Riesling. The 2017 vintage at Alkoomi saw a classic cool growing season with plenty of rainfall and cold temperatures, followed by an autumn that was quite dry and sunny. The fruit ripened slowly and evenly, developing complex flavors at low sugar levels. After an early morning harvest, the fruit was brought to the winery, where it underwent fermentation in stainless steel vats at cool temperatures. This helped preserve the freshness and vibrance of the grapes. The White Label Riesling 2017 of Alkoomi displays a brilliant staw-yellow color, with green reflections, in the glass. On the nose, this Australian Riesling delivers gorgeous aromas of citrus peel, white flowers and musk. On the palate, the flavors are intense, revealing grapefruit and a nice acidity that delivers freshness and length. While also ready to be consumed now, this wine has the acid structure to evolve beautifully in the bottle over the next five to eight years.
