Tasting note : R. Bohmrich
The Courbis family has holdings in both Cornas and St Joseph, and they are considered one of the best sources by critics like Steve Tanzer and the Spectator. St Joseph rouge, normally pure Syrah in practice (although 10% white grapes are allowed), is a fairly large appellation stretching along the western bank of the Rhone River. Styles vary from the soft and easy "bistro" version to the one that Courbis represents: full, well-structured and capable of developing in bottle. They maintain low yields (around 30 hectoliters per hectare across their domaine), practice complete destemming and a long vatting, and age in small barrels. Their 2005 St Joseph was scored '91' by the Wine Spectator.
