It has been in the same family since 1826. Hugh Barton, who already owned Château Langoa Barton, bought part of the Léoville estate, which would become Château Léoville Barton. The estate, which is managed as a simplified corporation, is currently run by Lilian Barton-Sartorius, alongside her father, Anthony Barton, a charismatic Irish wine-grower, very well-liked in Saint-Julien and throughout the Médoc region. The soil at Léoville Barton, made up mainly of a combination of thick layers of quaternary period gravel and clay sub-soil, is paradise for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet
Franc. These 50 hectares of vines are ideally situated a few hundred yards from the river. The wines they produce have strong characteristics that are unique to Saint-Julien. These are bold wines, with extreme finesse, insuperable elegance and a suave balance leaving a strong impression in the minds of those who appreciate their style. For Anthony Barton, master of the site, the soil is at the heart of it all but this only holds if people respect its qualities. The delicate balance of the ecosystem shaped by the soil must be taken into consideration to ensure that human activities do not distort the wine-making process at any time. The greatest virtues of Léoville Barton wines are their regularity and wisdom, as nurtured by Anthony Barton and his team.
