Greece- Ancient Land Reborn!
Friday, June 6, 7 to 8pm
If you think all Greek wine is Retsina, then you must attend this event! Greece has an ancient wine tradition, but the modern transformation of Greek wine is breathtaking. There are talented winemakers schooled in Italy and France, stunning wineries, and a dizzying array of indigenous varieties. Sometimes, these local grapes are blended with international ones like Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah or Cabernet for exciting results. Discover enticing dry whites made from Assyrtiko, Moschofilero and Roditis, a rosé and reds with character from Agiorgitiko and Limnio (we'll help with the pronunciation as well!). We can't think of better choices for summer drinking al fresco on your patio or deck - just as the Greeks do.
The wines to be featured are:
Gai'a Notios White 2007, Peleponnese
Notios means "the Southerner", and Gaia is one of Greece's top wineries, making wines with an international flair. This white is an elegant and harmonious blend of Moschofilero, which contributes vibrant, floral aromas and flavors, and Roditis, which provides a smooth, lemony character. We can't think of a better, more intriguing and quaffable white for the summer season!
Biblia Chora White 2006, Pangeon
The Biblia Chora Estate was founded in 2001 as a collaboration between celebrated Bordeaux-trained winemaker Evangelos Gerovassiliou of Domaine Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. This rich, flavorful yet unoaked blend of 50% Assyrtiko and 50% Sauvignon Blanc displays all the mineral and citrusy notes of Assyrtiko with the fresh acidity and flinty accents of fine Sauvignon Blanc.
Gai'a 14-18 h Rosé 2007, Peleponnese
This delicious rosé is made from the Agiorgitiko grape, and "14-18 h" refers to the number of hours the grape skins remain in contact with the must which allows the wine to acquire its intense rosy color. This rosé exhibits a fruity aroma which is dominated by cherry and gooseberry flavors and a cool refreshing taste, which makes it perfect to sip on its own or to pair with imaginative spicy dishes.
Semeli Mountain Sun Red 2006, Peleponnese
The Semeli Estate's vineyards are mainly situated on the southeast slopes of Penteli Mountain with an average altitude of 1500 feet. The estate's viticulturists employ low yields in order to help the grapes achieve full ripeness, which is often difficult in this cooler climate. This Mountain Sun Red is made from Agiorgitiko and has a fruity aroma of plum and cherries. On the mouth, it is smooth and soft with elegant tannins, perfect to pair with Mediterranean dishes - what a great bargain!
Gerovassiliou « Avaton » 2004, Epanomi
Domaine Gerovassiliou is the brainchild of Evangelos Gerovassiliou, who is considered the founding father of the modern Greek wine industry. Gerovassiliou played a key role not only in the development of new properties, but also in changing perceptions of Greek winemaking outside the country. Avaton is certainly one of the benchmarks for contemporary Greek red wine. It is truly Greek in all respects, as it is made from three indigenous varietals- Limnio, Mavroudi and Mavrotragano. Very limited.
Cost: $25 per person, $40 per couple.
